- Miami, FL to Key West, FL via Palmetto Expressway and US-1
We are headed south today, having gone both east and west yesterday.
Much of South Florida looks like this, lots of flat space and lots of swamp.
Then the swamp turns into channels between islands. There's boats!
And this is how they store the boats.
Sorry about the blurry focus. Katherine saw this Turtle Hospital at the last minute and grabbed a quick picture. She had never seen a Sea Turtle Hospital before, at least not one with a sign!
Where this is land, there are palm trees, lots of them, some with coconuts up high.
The channels quickly become vast open stretches of ocean with small islands, known as "keys" off in the distance. "Key" is derived from the Spanish "Cayo", meaning small island.
We've made it to Key West.
Karen and I spent a day on Key West in 2001 during a cruise. We had been chased by Hurricane Michelle for some of the cruise. We arrived there on Thursday and enjoyed nice weather. We toured the Little White House and Hemingway's home. Our cruise ship left the island on Thursday evening and stopped in Nassau, Bahamas before we flew home on Saturday. On Saturday evening I turned on the 11 p.m. news to learn that Key West had been evacuated the day after we were there and had been slammed by Hurricane Michelle. That was close!
ReplyDeleteNo hurricanes for us, other than the ones we drank in NOLA. We took a look at the Hemingway house but demurred due to stairs. The Little White House was closed by the time we got there. Our walk from the Southern Most Point to downtown got delayed by the Green Parrot bar. That was a ton of fun!
