To Sturgis Sans Harley, And Then To Rapid City, SD

Travel Day:
  • Williston, ND to Sturgis, SD via US 85
  • Sturgis, SD to Rapid City, SD via I-90
Williston, ND used to be a farming town. Now it's an oil town with all the attendant industry.

There are oil derricks, nodding horses, and flare offs all over the place.
It's the Bakken Shale Oil Field.

The Missouri River Valley just outside of Williston, ND.

We stopped in Belfield, ND for lunch at the Trapper's Kettle Restaurant. It's filled with taxidermy, stuffed animals including deer, moose, elk, bison, wolves, beaver, bears, and even a brown bear.

We saw a couple of herds of buffalo on a ranch. I guess these guys are destined for someone's dinner.

Another one of those roads, this one in South Dakota, which seems to go on forever.

We stopped for dinner at The Knuckle Saloon in Sturgis, SD, site of the famous Black Hills Rally. The last time I was here was with a minivan full of kids in 1995.

Downtown Sturgis, SD without the motorcyles and the Black Hills Rally. This year they are expecting 1.5 million visitors during the month of August. This road will be jammed with people and motorcycles.

This picture is on the wall of a local shop. This is what the main street looks like in August.
