On To Pensacola

Travel Day
  • New Orleans, LA to Pensacola, FL via I-10
  • Pensacola, FL to Gulf Breeze, FL via I-110 and SR 98

Before we left NOLA, we took a tour through the Lower 9th Ward, the area of New Orleans most damaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Nearly a decade later, there are still a great many abandoned, burned out and looted homes.

This is the levee in the Lower 9th Ward, the one that did not keep out the flood tide from Hurricane Katrina. The levee failed; the water flooded in.

Crossing the Industrial Canal which separates the Lower 9th from the Upper 9th Ward. The levee was intact on the Upper 9th side, protecting that side of the city from the disastrous flooding that struck the Lower 9th.

This building is in Mobile, Alabama, just as you head into the tunnel under Mobile Bay. I am not sure what those circles are for. Katherine thinks they are decorative to reflect the two tubes of the tunnel.

We are back on the Gulf Coast, this time in Florida. This is a view of Pensacola Bay.

This is the bridge across Pensacola Bay to the community of Gulf Breeze, where we are staying for tonight.
