Another NOLA Day

Travel Day

  • No Travel. Exploring NOLA
No, that is not DisneyLand. That is the St. Louis Cathedral off Jackson Square in New Orleans, within the French Quarter.

A random performing Steel Drum Band showed up opposite Jackson Square. We had just finished breakfast, or lunch as it were, at Cafe Du Monde, just a few yards away.

We took a Mississippi River Cruise on the SS. Natchez, a paddlewheel steamboat. We saw these Ro-Ro container ships along the riverside, part of the US strategic reserve fleet. They just sit there, waiting for something bad to happen, then they are put into use.

There is a lot of shipping on the Mississippi near NOLA, with seagoing freighters, river barges, small shipping and tugs all jockeying for space on the river.

Another tourist paddlewheeler, readying for its two hour tour.

This is the Crescent City Connector Bridge, which connects West New Orleans to East New Orleans by going from the east side of the river to the west side of the river. It's confusing; look at a map.

  1. We did the S. S. Natchez river cruise in July. Had a great time listening to the Dixieland band on board.

  2. I'm enjoying your great trip.

Here's a tip that occurred to me for stretching your food budget: when we travel my wife often hits the grocery store and gets bread and fresh deli meats for sandiwches, as well as bottled water and snacks to put in the cooler. Any grocery with a good deli will offer fresh meats and cheese, and for less than the fried fast food costs. You should be able to eat healthier and more affordably, saving some money for the evening dining out!
