- Lincoln City, OR to Ukiah, CA via US 101
This is the hotel I was talking about in my blog entry about Poly Bear. You go into the lobby on the top floor and down the elevator to your room and the beach. It's the upside down hotel.
As I headed down the Oregon Coast, there were plenty of places like this which cried out for me to take a picture. So I did. Lots of them
This is the last major beach as you drive south towards California. This is near Coos Bay, OR. As you go further south, the foreshore gets rougher and the beaches get smaller.
Here is a great example of how the coastline changes the closer you get to the California border.
In places the coastline is sufficiently rough that the road goes inland, deep into the heart of the Oregon forests.
This is typical of the woodland sections of the highway, heavily treed with plenty of logging. They usually keep the logging back from the highway so as not to upset the tourists.
It's hard to see, but that painted sign on the road says "Ocean View". It is a favourite of mine, simply because it is different. The highway turns, but the road goes straight, to an ocean view.
And just to prove it, here is the ocean view at the top of the hill. You have to turn left here, or right, or you can go straight over the cliff if you want to.
Once again, an example of how the foreshore and coastline get rocky and rugged as you move further south.
And this is what happens when it gets too rough on the shoreline. You go right into the mountains and forests once again.
This sign is for David Turner. It's not the town, it's the river.
Aw gee, Oregon is so polite! They want me to come back!
California is polite too. My plan was to stop in Crescent City, or perhaps in Eureka. It didn't quite work out that way, as noted in this blog entry.
California calls US 101 the "Redwood Highway" in this part of the state. These trees will help explain why. It may sound odd, but darkness is descending as I take this picture, so this is the last one for the day. Fitting that it should be of Redwood trees in California.
