Headed South, Sort Of

Travel Day

  • Inuvik, NT to Eagle Plains, YT via The Dempster Highway

The first step to leaving Inuvik is to cross the mighty Mackenzie River.

Shortly after, you cross the pristine Peel River.

No matter how you look at it, this is big country up here. Those are clouds on that mountain.

After you drive for a couple of hours, you cross the Yukon border, and pick up an hour in the process.

It's still pretty big country up here. The landscape goes on forever; tundra, taiga, boreal forest.

Back at the Arctic Circle. This time headed south.

Once again we cross the Rat River.

The story of the Mad Trapper of Rat River.

A bit more information.

The lounge at the Eagle Plains Hotel.

A different view of the lounge, including the bar.

And the lovely Eveline, our hostess. Like so many of us, she is a transplant here in the north, originally from Bavaria, Germany.
