- Tok, AK to Fairbanks, AK via AK 2 (Alaska Highway, Richardson Highway)
The Alaska Highway from Tok to Delta Junction is fairly ordinary; a long, reasonably straight road, lined by trees, houses and small land holdings. It could be any highway anywhere in North America. Oh, but it was 30 degrees Celsius today, the hottest day on our trip so far.
The Alaska Highway ends at Delta Junction, where it joins with the Richardson Highway on to Fairbanks.
I can't really read this. Can you?
The mosquitoes are big up here, almost as big as they are in Manitoba.
The Tanana River; wide, lots of gravel bars, and apparently it has gold in it.
Can you read this? I sort of can read it.
How about this one? I'll keep trying.
As you approach the Fairbanks area, you pass Eilson AFB, home of the Alaska Air National Guard.
See, I spelled it right. We did not go in.
We did, however, stop in North Pole, Alaska. This whole town is one big marketing gimmick, intentionally named in hopes of attracting a toy making business. It didn't attract, but the name stuck.
Not true. There are others who live here.
Even the street names are kitschy.
This is the Santa Clause House, a tourist trap if there ever was one. Mostly it sells Christmas decorations and over-priced souvenirs.
Here he is, the big guy himself.
Katherine has a squirrel by the tail. Santa does not look worried.
We finally escaped North Pole and made it to Fairbanks. By this time the mercury had hit 34 degrees Celcius. This is Alaska, right?
