- Fairbanks, AK to Anchorage, AK via AK-3 and AK-1 (Parks Highway and Glenn Highway)
For the first two hours of our drive, the skies were nothing but a dull haze from forest fire smoke. It was impossible to see anything beyond a few hundred feet.
Nenana is about an hour from Fairbanks and you can see how dull the sky remains.
When we finally lost the smoke, we were deep into the construction. The road from Fairbanks to Anchorage is about 350 miles. A good 150 miles was under construction, forcing us to stop for anywhere from a few minutes to a half hour, several times. Our 6 hour drive ended up taking us almost 9 hours.
Even when we could see something, the mountains were covered in low cloud. I know Mt. McKinley is out there somewhere but we didn't get to see it.
As we got closer to Anchorage we could see the mountains of the Kenai Peninsula. That's what I expect Alaska to look like, kind of like BC!
We've been 3 days in Alaska and not seen one large animal. Finally we see this poor little baby moose, who seems to be separated from his Momma, along the fence beside Elmendorf AFB, right in Anchorage.
