New York, New York

Travel Day

  • Morgantown, WV to Hagerstown, MD via I-68
  • Hagerstown, MD to New York, NY via I-78, I-81, Jersey Ave (Hoboken, NJ), Palisads Ave. (Hoboken, NJ), Willow Ave. (Weehawken, NJ) and The Lincoln Tunnel
We left Morgantown, WV looking at more clouds, more mountains, more rivers, and more rain.

Off in the distance, those are the last of the Blue Ridge Mountains, but not the last of the Appalachian chain.

We crossed over into Maryland, and the terrain continued to be hilly and wet.

The fog hanging to the hillsides is persistent in this part of the country. Maryland here is a narrow strip between Virginia and Pennylvania. The border is the Potomac River. The terrain knows no state borders. It just continues on up.

We stopped for a break in Hagerstown, MD. Katherine had a coffee; I had a nap.

Then we made the left turn and headed up on into Pennsylvania.

Eventually the land went from rugged hills to slow rolling farmland. They grow corn here, lots of it. Oh, and those are the Poconos off in the distance, another range in the Appalachian chain.

We are getting closer. For some reason the GPS kept taking us to the Holland Tunnel instead of the Lincoln Tunnel. In this case, I went with what the GPS recommended. It's been wrong several times on this trip, so I was nervous.

Our first view of NYC as we headed across Newark Bay in New Jersey. The Hudson River is still in the way; that's the tunnel part.

For some reason the GPS wanted us to have a tour of Hoboken, NJ. Who goes to Hoboken?

Then the GPS took us on a wander down Palisade Ave in Hoboken and Willow Ave in Weehawken, just to get us in the line for the Lincoln Tunnel. Not the way I would have gone, but what do I know? I am just a country boy from Calgary, and Katherine is just a poor girl from Hong Kong!

The picture may not be the best, but finally we made it to the Lincoln Tunnel. Our hotel is two blocks away on the other side of the tunnel. We are here!
